Configuration & Burn-In Testing

Configuration & Burn-In Testing

Before any device hits production, we verify it works. We perform hardware configuration, BIOS or firmware updates, and full bench-level burn-in testing to catch failures early and reduce field issues. Our QC process is documented and repeatable. ITSR Data’s configuration and burn-in services ensure that every piece of equipment entering your data center has been thoroughly validated, stress-tested, and documented — eliminating surprises and protecting your uptime.

Preventing DOA Deployments

Even with the best manufacturers and supply chains, hardware defects are an unavoidable reality. Industry studies consistently show that 2-4% of new server hardware arrives with defects that would not be caught by a simple power-on test. These range from intermittent memory errors and marginal thermal performance to firmware bugs and misconfigured RAID controllers.

Consider the math for a typical enterprise deployment:

  • 100-rack deployment: At a 2-4% defect rate, that means 2 to 4 servers that could fail on the production floor — causing unplanned downtime, emergency truck rolls, and RMA delays.
  • 1,000-server refresh: Without proper burn-in testing, you could be installing 20 to 40 servers with latent defects into your production environment.
  • Hyperscale buildout: At scale, even a 1% defect rate translates into dozens of problem units that drain engineering time and erode SLA performance.

The cost of catching a defect at the bench is a fraction of the cost of catching it in production. Burn-in testing is not a luxury — it is a risk mitigation strategy that pays for itself on the first prevented outage.

Our Testing Protocol

ITSR Data’s burn-in and configuration process is designed to simulate real-world production conditions and catch failures that short-cycle power-on testing would miss. Our protocol includes:

  • Memory Stress Testing: We run comprehensive memory diagnostics across all installed DIMMs, testing for single-bit errors, multi-bit errors, and address-line faults using tools like MemTest86+ and vendor-specific diagnostics. Extended memory testing runs for a minimum of 4-8 hours to surface intermittent errors.
  • CPU Load Testing: All processor cores are driven to 100% sustained utilization for extended periods to verify thermal performance, VRM stability, and clock consistency. We monitor for thermal throttling, unexpected frequency drops, and correctable machine check exceptions (MCEs).
  • Storage Verification: Every installed drive — HDD, SSD, or NVMe — is tested for read/write performance, SMART health indicators, and error rates. RAID arrays are built, verified, and stress-tested to confirm controller operation and drive interoperability.
  • Network Throughput Testing: All network interfaces are tested for link negotiation, throughput at rated speed, and packet loss under sustained load. We verify both onboard NICs and add-in network cards, including 10GbE, 25GbE, and 100GbE interfaces.
  • BIOS/Firmware Validation: We update every device to the manufacturer’s latest stable BIOS revision and firmware version. BIOS settings are configured to your specifications, including boot order, virtualization extensions, power management profiles, and IPMI/iLO/iDRAC management interface setup.
  • Thermal & Power Draw Analysis: We monitor system temperatures and power consumption throughout the burn-in cycle to verify that cooling capacity is adequate and power draw falls within expected parameters for your PDU and circuit planning.
  • Component Manifest Verification: Before any testing begins, we verify that the shipped hardware matches your purchase order — confirming CPU models, memory capacity and speed, drive counts and models, NIC types, GPU presence, and any option cards or custom configurations.

What We Do

  • Hardware Configuration: We configure servers, switches, storage arrays, and appliances to your exact specifications — including RAID arrays, NIC bonding, IPMI/iLO/iDRAC setup, and management interface provisioning.
  • BIOS & Firmware Updates: Every device receives the latest BIOS revision and firmware updates from the manufacturer, ensuring compatibility, security, and optimal performance before deployment.
  • Extended Burn-In Testing: We run devices under sustained workloads for 24 to 72 hours, stress-testing CPUs, memory, storage, and network interfaces to identify intermittent failures that short-cycle testing would miss.
  • Stress Testing & Load Simulation: Using industry-standard tools, we simulate production-level loads to verify thermal performance, power draw, and system stability under real-world conditions.
  • DOA Detection & Reporting: Dead-on-arrival components are identified before they reach your rack. We document failures with detailed logs and coordinate RMA processes directly with manufacturers or vendors on your behalf.
  • Quality Assurance Documentation: Every device that passes our QC process receives a signed-off checklist documenting configurations applied, tests performed, results recorded, and firmware versions installed.
  • Component Verification: We verify that shipped hardware matches purchase orders — confirming CPU models, memory capacity, drive counts, NIC types, and option cards before any configuration begins.
  • Repeatable QC Workflows: We develop and maintain standardized QC procedures tailored to your hardware models and deployment requirements, ensuring consistency across batches of 10 or 1,000 devices.

Why Choose ITSR

Field failures are expensive — not just in hardware costs, but in truck rolls, downtime, and lost productivity. ITSR Data’s burn-in and configuration process catches problems at the bench, where they’re cheapest to fix. Our technicians have configured and tested thousands of enterprise devices across every major server, storage, and networking platform. We maintain detailed records for every unit we process, giving you a complete quality assurance trail from unboxing through deployment.
